ESMO 2022

September 13, 2022

The ESMO Congress 2022 was held in person in Paris and virtually between 9-13 September 2022.

The congress programme, with lectures, abstract and late-breaking abstract titles, is available online. While the congress itself focusses mainly on solid tumors, there were few sessions on hematological malignancies (especially in lymphoma and CLL).

However ESMO is well-known for its patient track. The 2022 Patient Advocates Track Sessions are designed by the Patient Advocates Working Group (PAWG) and represent an opportunity for all Congress delegates to learn, share and explore areas of collaboration while discussing topical issues for patients and survivors that directly impact cancer care and medical research.  This year’s topics covered:

  • Supporting Ukraine: The European cancer advocacy community responds

  • I am FINE: Frustrated * Isolated * Neglected * Emotional

  • Join us, learn, and share: Best practices across Europe

  • Patient involvement in clinical research: Placing the patient at the centre

  • The loved ones’ perspective and role: Best practices to support cancer caregiver

  • The impact of COVID-19 on patients with cancer: Lessons learnt and pathway for the future

  • Patient Advocates and their expertise: How to get involved

If you are interested in any of the sessions above, let us know and we’ll provide a report to you. With our Leukemia Carer Experience Survey, our Global Summit in which we’ll talk about patient advocates and their expertise, and our involvement in various international projects, ALAN’s work and priorities are in line with discussions that are happening on European and international levels.

ESMO was also the opportunity for WECAN to meet and nominate the new chair, Hans Scheurer, replacing Jan Geissler, our steering committee representative.

The next congress attended by ALAN will be ASH, in New Orleans in december 2022 – Stay tuned !
